Sunflower Ceramic Studio was established in 2019 after I moved to Houston. I started the business because of my love for clay and how it engages all of the senses. My products are made primarily by throwing on the pottery wheel, with a focus on making dinnerware.

Trimming a plate today! One of the best parts of using a jigger tool is the minimal touch up needed after shaping. Up next is waiting for it to dry to put my signature, then its off to the bisque firing 🔥

Learning as I go 🌻 The first plate didn't quite turn out as planned - I thought I could just pry it off the mold, but it warped the rim. But then I remembered: compressed air! A quick blast between the mold and the rim, and the plate pops right out without any warping. I'm slowly working out the kinks of this new process and it feels good.

🌻 The prototype plate is finished, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! The speckles really shine through, adding a nice touch. 😌 It got lighter after the final kiln firing, which is a nice bonus. There’s a bit of warping from when I tried to remove it from the plaster, but I’ve got tips for fixing that next time. Overall, thrilled with the results and can’t wait to see how the next two plates turn out!

Making more plates today! These will be a little thinner, a little lighter than the prototype plate that I made. Pictured here are “blanks”, which are thick slabs that have been cut into a circle so that they're ready to be used by the jigger. I'll be recording today so there’ll be a little vid later this week about what working with the jigger looks like. The test plate should be out of the glaze firing by the end of the week. Plates, plates, plates! 😁

I’m excited to share some big news with you all — my products are now available at a retail space in East End! You can find my bowls and mugs at The Factory, open daily from Monday through Sunday between 12pm-6pm. Their soft opening is today from 12pm-6pm, and their grand opening is Saturday, February 15, between 5pm-8pm. Let me know if you guys stop by, please take some pictures! I’d love to see them. Out of the bisque firing and into my hands 🙌 after shrinkage, the plate sits comfortably at 8 inches. It will still shrink a bit more after the final glaze firing, but I still think its a decent size. The plate is still on the heavier side than I would like, so I’ll need to calibrate the arm a bit more in order to make lighter plates. I'll be making more on Monday, I think I'll even be able to make a reel showing the process! Lots of exciting things in the works, I'm excited to show you guys 🌻

The test plate is coming along! I’ll be dropping it off for it’s bisque firing today 🔥 I popped it off the plaster mold, trimmed and sanded it, then added my yellow signature. I was able to see the inside of the plate for the first time and wow, I’m impressed. The gentle curve is perfect for eating off of. I can’t wait to glaze it and show you guys the final result.

🌻 Today was the first day I used the jigger for my studio and honestly? It felt amazing. It’s so different compared to throwing, while still getting a smooth result. The plates start off as a thick slab, then with the jigger arm get transformed into a plate. Foot ring included! The only downside is that this eats a lot of clay. I only made one plate so far and I’ve already made a dent in the clay bag. I think the result would be worth it though. Identical matching plates? Yes please 😍
