2020-2021 Portfolio

This year I focus on geometric shapes and repetition.

My goal was to focus on using an achromatic color scheme in order to emphasize the seemingly rigid and clinical nature of mathematics. I experimented with saturated colors in a few pieces in order to show that geometry can be fluid and organic.

This year I am looking forward to expanding my color palette and working with new forms. I also wanted to keep exploring the concept of combining science and art.

This year I experimented with a new technique to make lines cleaner. This enabled me to create grid lines that had a higher level of craftsmanship. This was also the year I solidified the concept of “Graph Paper” with my grid lines and corresponding glazes. Now, I can have a full line of products in the “Graph Paper” design and accomplish it with ease. I am adding yellow to my color palette and had fun experimenting with that this year. In the future I can expect to see more yellow.

Something new this year that I experimented with was colored clay. We have cereal bowls and tumbler cups in delicious swirls of color. We have pieces in a blue and purple combination, and we also have pieces in a yellow and orange combination. Each swirl is one of a kind due to the nature of the creation process.

This year I continued to experiment with colored clay by working with a two-toned mug.By using one color for the handle, and a differing color for the body, I learned how to improve my craftsmanship so that the joints between these two colors were clean. I tried a rectangular mug shape this year, as opposed to last year’s round mug bodies, for my grid design. It was interesting to see a rigid design complimented with a rigid form.

I used new glazes for my grid pieces. Rather than having the pink “graph paper” a cool blue was used to compliment the aqua grid lines. I did experiment with adding more yellow this year, and resulted with using orange for grid lines and yellow for the interior as a complimentary color.
